Giving Your Fabric A Second Life #SustainableSewing

Sustainable Sewing: Giving Your Fabric a Second Life

If you’re anything like me, you fall in love with fabric the moment you see it. The colour, the texture, the drape — it all speaks to you. And when you finally cut into it for that perfect project, it feels like magic. But then comes the part every sewist knows too well: the leftovers.

What do you do with all those scraps?

Are they too small? Too oddly shaped? Too precious to toss?

It’s amazing how much thought we can put into something as simple as a leftover piece of cotton.

And let’s be honest — scraps pile up fast.

But here’s the good news: **there is no such thing as a “too small” scrap if you know how to use it.** Sustainable sewing isn’t just about reducing waste; it’s about seeing potential where others see clutter. Those tiny pieces can become something beautiful, functional, and meaningful.

Why Sustainable Sewing Matters.

Fabric is an investment — in money, in creativity, and in the planet. When we throw scraps away, we’re tossing out all of that value. Sustainable sewing helps us:

- Reduce textile waste

- Stretch our fabric budget

- Spark creativity in new ways

- Honour the materials we love

And honestly, it feels good to turn “leftovers” into something you’re proud to use or gift.

So… What Can You Make With Scraps?

The real question is: what can’t you make?

Scraps can become:

- Patchwork panels

- Quilted bags

- Key fobs

- Fabric rope bowls

- Appliqué

- Doll clothes

- Pockets, bindings, and trims

- Even new “fabric” made from tiny pieces

Once you start looking at scraps as ingredients instead of waste, the possibilities open right up.

February at Practical Stitches: A Month of Sustainable Sewing

All month long on the Practical Stitches YouTube channel, we’re diving deep into sustainable sewing. I’ll be sharing projects, tips, and inspiration to help you use what you already have — and love every minute of it.

Here’s what’s coming:

♻️ Denim Patchwork Tote Bag

Check out the video where I turned old jeans into a gorgeous patchwork tote using the free Pecan Patchwork Bag pattern from Mood Sewciety. It’s sturdy, stylish, and a perfect example of how upcycling can be both practical and beautiful.

Making “New Fabric” From Tiny Scraps

During the LIVE sessions, we’re taking the tiniest bits — the ones you think are too small to matter — and turning them into usable fabric. Once you’ve created your own scrapmade textile, you can transform it into anything you like: bags, pouches, appliqué, and more.
